House District 60 is a large rural legislative district in central and southern Colorado, made up of all or part of six counties: Chaffee, Custer and Park, plus parts of Fremont, Pueblo and Saguache [see map on this page]. The District includes at least 20 Fourteeners, key mountain ranges, a number of mountain passes, rivers, lakes, forests, trails, high valleys such as South Park and part of the San Luis Valley, the edge of the Great Sand Dunes, and more than 44 communities. The largest of these communities is Cañon City, still considered a small town by many of its residents!
Agriculture and tourism are very important in the District, as are other private and public employers including the State of Colorado, particularly some of its state correctional facilities. Outdoor recreation opportunities are widespread the District includes opportunities for mountain climbing, hiking, camping, fishing, rafting, rock climbing, and seeing sights such as the Great Sand Dunes and the Royal Gorge. Additionally, the District has a significant retirement population people who have lived their entire lives in this part of Colorado, and those who have come from all over Colorado and the nation to enjoy the clean air and water and the pleasures of rural and small town living.
